5 Days of HP Latex R-Series

Written by Bob Miller – Manager of Color Services and Customer Experience.

As manager of color services at IT Supplies, I’ve seen a lot over my 18 years in the industry.  During this time, there have only been a few pivotal moments where breakthrough technology comes along and shakes up the industry.   The R Series is that technology.

Several weeks ago, I had an opportunity to travel to Boise for operator training on the R2000.  From the moment I walked into the room, it was obvious that this unit stood out from the rest.  Its sleek industrial design with touch screens on both sides let you know that this technology was painstakingly developed to handle the needs of today and tomorrow.

So what’s the big deal?  The answer is simple.  Latex!

Adhesion and Gamut are no longer a tradeoff:

From day 1 we began testing the new R Series using a variety of different substrates.  These substrates included Foam Board, PVC, Paper, Coroplast, Tango Board, Acrylic, and more.  In every case, we discovered that the adhesive properties met or exceeded our expectations.

Ease of Use:

While the R series has many innovative features, some of the biggest advancements come directly from the automated way in which they handle the latex inks. Using a new feature called macro recirculation, this printer is designed to reduce the maintenance and waste typically associated with white ink.  Macro recirculation allows the white ink to flow from one side of the ink container, through the printer, and back into a separate bladder on the other side of the container.  This frequent circulation of ink keeps the heavier particles from clumping together and clogging the nozzles.  When not in use, the white ink print heads can be easily removed and replaced with recirculating print heads.  Once removed, the white ink print heads can be placed in the recirculation chamber within the printer.  This chamber rotates the print heads when not in use, thus keeping them ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Other notable advancements contributing to reduced maintenance and ease of use include:
  1. Industrial, user replaceable, thermal print heads
  2. An optical droplet detector that senses when nozzles are out and redirects them as needed.
  3. Auto print head maintenance
  4. Edge to edge media thickness sensor
  5. Auto skew adjustment between jobs on roll to roll.
In summary, I strongly urge anyone interested in purchasing a new flatbed printer to reach out to myself or any of the knowledgeable commercial sales specialists at IT Supplies.   This printer has so many advancements, that there is no way a short blog post can do it justice.
